Real Estate Australia: Search Engine Scrutiny

Published by AU Editor under Industry Reports

An investigation into who’s leading online in the Australian Real Estate industry

With Real Estate continuing to be as hot a topic in a downturn as it was during the boom, its popularity online is as strong as ever. As traditional forms of advertising become comparatively more expensive as prices fall, the lure of cost effective online marketing for vendors and media-rich formats for purchasers make the internet the ideal place for buying and selling property.

This report examines which Real Estate companies are benefiting from the substantial volume of traffic originating everyday from search engines in Australia. It illustrates those websites who rank high in the ‘natural’ search engine results and those who are taking advantage of paid search engine advertising programs in order to gain a proportion of the high traffic volumes available in this industry.

Search Insights allows you to research the popularity of search terms over time and by region. Region can drill down to the state or even city. Different time periods or regions can also be compared side by side. It should be noted that the traffic numbers and regional demand are all normalised and so if you want to find specific search volume numbers in each region you should use Google’s Keyword Tool.

In the study below I wanted to examine the popularity of “ski” related terms used by Australian users. During this research I used the very powerful Category option. This option allows you to filter the search volumes based on the category the searches fall into. For example in this analysis I have examined “ski” filtered by “Travel” and “Shopping” and you can see below the impact this category filter has on the results.

Google Analytics Advanced Configurations

It is unsurprising that Google Analytics is fast becoming the industry standard in website analytics. It’s free, fast and functional and only a small percentage of sites really need anything more than the extensive feature set offered by Google Analytics.

Google Analytics is a very powerful tool; however few users really utilise all the functions and thus only realise a small percentage of the benefits they could.

This article discusses a range of advanced options and configurations that should be considered and implemented where business value would be gained from having access to the new information gathered. Rather than a detailed technical guide, this article introduces each option and discusses why a business may wish to utilise it.
